North Woods, Pleasant Valley and Sandy Island Alumni
Sandy Island, North Woods and Pleasant Valley History and Alumni: 2020 HISTORY STARS
Our three New Hampshire overnight camps have a lot in common and many of our camping families have connections to multiple camps. The Camping Board wants to help all our alumni to remain connected to each other and to their camps. We have appointed three “History Stars,” one from each camp, to kick off this project.
Steph Uhlmann, Pleasant Valley’s History Star, has provided the theme for this year: ALUMNI ENGAGEMENT. Read about these history stars and alumni contacts here.
If you have ideas or questions about this project, contact any of our History Stars through the main Camp Office!
PLEASANT VALLEY GIRLS CAMP: History Star, STEPH UHLMANN
Steph Uhlmann has a long history with Pleasant Valley Girls Camp, as a PVC camper for seven years and then as a PVC staff member for six years! As a staff member, she served as a Ropes Course Program Head, and then as the Junior Village Leader. Steph’s siblings also attended PVC. Now Steph has joined the Pleasant Valley Camp Committee and serves on the PVCC Alumni Committee.
Steph reports that there are many smaller, but very active, groups among the PVC alumni. She also notes that there is a huge PVC Alumni Facebook group, with over 300 members. Steph believes that increasing communication between the smaller groups would lead to more involvement among the PVC alumni as a whole.
Steph’s recommendation: Alumni Engagement! Join a PVC alumni group. Have fun by sharing your stories and your old photos. Help to share those stories with the larger PVC history and alumni group!
NORTH WOODS BOYS CAMP: History Star, TED LANE
Ted Lane has many connections to North Woods Boys Camp. Ted started as a camper at North Woods in 1980, then advanced to assistant counselor and counselor. In 1993 he become the waterfront director at the camp. Ted’s children currently attend North Woods and Pleasant Valley camps, and his wife works as the camp nurse. Ted himself is currently serving on the North Woods Camp Committee.
Ted reports that NWC alumni are currently grouped by generations, and tend to have most contact with other people from their own time at North Woods. North Woods staff also has a strong alumni group.
Ted’s recommendation: Stay in touch with your camp friends! Ted enjoys the in-person contacts he has with NW alumni. He attends a ski weekend with some of the NW alumni, and he is thrilled that now the children of NW alumni have become friends themselves. Ted also reports that the Memorial Day work weekend at North Woods is always a strong alumni reunion.
SANDY ISLAND FAMILY CAMP: History Star, KIM MYETTE
Kim Myette has a long history with Sandy Island starting as a camper for the first time when she was nine years old. In her teenage years she was on staff at Sandy, first in the dining hall, then the store and finally as one of the first girls on Service Crew. Her memories and friendships from those years on Staff are endless. Kim still attends Sandy Island yearly with her extended family, children and grandchildren.
Kim reports that many Sandy Island camp weeks have their own Facebook pages. She herself is active in quite a few Sandy Island Facebook pages, including Sandy’s history and archives page. She is also a member of the Sandy Island Camp Committee. She volunteers at work weekends and the retired work week in September.
Kim’s recommendation: Stay involved! Reach out to your camp family on Facebook. Camp friends are forever friends.
